Basketball Tournament Weekend: A Survival Guide for Parents

Tournament weekends are a marathon. Your player might have three or four games across two days, sometimes in different gyms, with long gaps in between. A little planning makes the whole weekend easier on everyone.

1. Check the schedule the night before, then check it again

Brackets and game times change. Confirm the gym address and court number before you leave, and keep an eye on updates throughout the day.

2. Pack a cooler

Gym food gets expensive and isn't always what an athlete needs between games. Pack water, sports drinks, fruit, sandwiches and easy snacks for both your player and yourself.

3. Bring a comfortable layer

Gyms swing between freezing and sweltering. A hoodie you can throw on or pull off keeps you comfortable all day.

4. Seat cushion and a small bag

Gym bleachers are rough for a full day. A cushion and a small bag for your phone, charger, keys and snacks keeps you organized.

5. A plan for the downtime

Long gaps between games are normal. Find a nearby spot to eat, a place for your player to rest, or something to keep younger siblings busy.

6. Extra gear for your player

Spare socks, an extra jersey, a towel, tape and a phone charger. Somebody always forgets something.

7. Show your colors

Cheering from the stands is part of the fun. A Basketball Mom or Basketball Dad hoodie or tee lets everyone in the gym know who you're there for.
