Wrestling Tournament Day: What Every Wrestling Parent Should Pack

Wrestling tournaments are some of the longest days in youth sports. Early weigh-ins, hours of waiting and then a match that can be over in minutes. Wrestling parents learn fast that being prepared makes all the difference.

1. Food for after weigh-ins

Once weigh-ins are done, your wrestler will want to eat and refuel. Pack easy foods and plenty of water so they're not relying on the concession stand all day.

2. A way to track the brackets

Many tournaments post brackets and mat assignments online or on the gym wall. Keep your phone charged and know your wrestler's weight class and bracket so you don't miss a match.

3. A comfortable layer

Gyms can be cold early in the morning and hot once the crowd fills in. A heavy hoodie is easy to put on or take off as the day goes.

4. Seat cushion or folding chair

You'll be sitting for hours. A cushion for the bleachers, or a folding chair if the venue allows it, makes a long day easier.

5. Gear bag check

Headgear, shoes, singlet, a warmup, a towel and a mouthguard if needed. Check the bag before you leave the house.

6. Patience for the long gaps

There's a lot of waiting between matches. Bring a book, a charger or something to keep siblings busy.

7. Let them know you're in the stands

When your wrestler steps on the mat, they'll look for you. A Wrestling Mom or Wrestling Dad hoodie makes you easy to spot.
